Emperor Akihito has reportedly been diagnosed with influenza after failing to appear for duties on Monday, according to the Imperial Household Agency.

With symptoms of severe dehydration, a banging headache, and just wanting to “lie on the sofa and watch movies”, the Emperor plans to stay in his palace until at least Wednesday afternoon.

The emperor headed out for a quiet one Sunday evening but reportedly arrived home well past midnight.

“He had been having intense dreams all night, which mostly consisted of trying to acquire or drink water,” said one source close to the palace.

The Emperor reportedly crawled out of bed at around 2:30 p.m.

“I was busting for the toilet all morning, but just couldn’t muster the strength,” the Emperor reportedly told aides.
