Pickpocketing crimes throughout Japan are expected to rise dramatically after a court in Osaka overturned a molestation charge this week on the grounds that the defendant was pickpocketing.
It is common knowledge that most women in Japan don’t have handbags and it is a longstanding Japanese tradition that women carry purses in their pockets close to their genitals.
Judge Arakane deemed that the woman was too quick to assume she was the target of lust and explained that most women have a lot more valuable assets than their dignities.
“Women need to stop wearing pants with pockets to avoid these kinds of situations,” Judge Arakane said during his final verdict.
Authorities are now preparing for a spate of pickpocketing arrests throughout the country.
