A new study has found a positive correlation between the speed of which foreigners speak Japanese and their overall Japanese awesomeness.
Researchers have concluded that foreigners often use the strategy of looking awesome by speaking faster to cover their lack of Japanese ability.
“We found that some foreigners examined attempted to mask their Japanese language deficiencies by speaking faster,” said the lead researcher.
“This had the desired effect of looking awesome to other foreigners, however Japanese people tended to think these people would benefit from some kind of speech therapy.”
The research results also applied to reading Japanese out aloud in Japanese language lessons where the faster the student would read the more awesome they appeared to their peers.
One gaijin commented of a fellow gaijin, “Wow, that foreigner’s Japanese is so awful it’s mostly incomprehensible but she’s speaking with such speed that she must be awesome.”
