Tokyo 2020 medals made from recycled consumer devices will be presented to winning athletes with small plastic bags.
The environmental benefits of the medals, which are designed to resemble polished stones, will immediately be cancelled out by the carry bags.
“The medals will be placed inside the plastic bags even if athletes say they don’t want a plastic bag,” says Olympic spokesman Shigeru Matahara.
About 32 kilograms of gold was extracted from 6.2 million old mobile phones purchased with over-priced lock-in contracts.
The medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics only included a small percentage of recycled material, but athletes were forced to carry their medals with their bare hands.
Olympic officials will also place a plastic fork inside the plastic bags for certain competitors.
