China’s President Xi Jinping said his country wants its kanji back in a telephone call with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday.

Xi reportedly told Abe that Japan’s free ride off the back of Chinese kanji since the 5th century C.E. had come to an end.

“China is sick of Japan claiming kanji as their own,” Xi reportedly told Abe.

“Make your own logographic characters.”

Abe retorted by arguing Japan had “slightly altered the kanjis and therefore made them our own”.

“Just like you’ve ripped off Winnie The Pooh with your face.”

Xi told Abe if he “loves America so much” they should replace kanji with katakana.

Abe told Xi this is happening anyway.
