Christmas in Japan has been reduced to “メリクリ” this year with a full “メリークリスマス” being way too arduous.
“Nobody has time to type out a full メリークリスマス – or say it,” says local salaryman Naoki Fujimoto.
Many outside people have appropriated the abbreviated version of Merry Christmas and are sending out LINE messages with “メリクリ” while feeling really chuffed about themselves.
“It’s amazing how I’ve learned to take ‘メリークリスマス’ and take out the ‘ー’ and ‘スマス’ to give me ‘メリクリ’,” says outside person Michelle Nunes.
Michelle will be celebrating Christmas this year with chicken and a 7-hour shift of eikaiwa.
