Democracy protests in Asia have spread to Japan on Sunday with thousands of mascots marching through the streets of Tokyo.
Demonstrations were sparked after the International Olympic Committee discriminated against Kumamon by rejecting the bear’s torchbearer application for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics claiming it’s “not a human being”.
“If anyone should bear a torch, it should be a bear,” a spokesperson for Kumamon told reporters.
The public were devastated by the news with some citizens joining demonstrations.
There were reports of pockets of violence in some Tokyo districts where protestors threw garbage they had been carrying for hours onto sidewalks because there are no public rubbish bins.
Police were forced to use tear gas against these “unruly animals”.
Domo-kun, the NHK mascot, was reportedly too scared to protest against the official line.
