Family Mart has announced it will be phasing out the use of plastic bags in its convenience stores by the year 2029.

The ban on plastic will take place a full year before 7-Eleven who announced they will be terminating the use of plastic bags in their stores by 2030.

“People need a full decade to wean themselves off the plastic bag,” says Family Mart CEO Nobu Rokuhara.

“You can’t just suddenly take away plastic bags from the people and expect them to be okay.”

The announcement by the two major convenience store companies has caused a rush on plastic bags with many customers today asking for two plastic bags, instead of one, when purchasing a single onigiri.
