A foreigner living in Japan for near on the majority of his lifetime (3 years out of 27) has become fluent in the word “itai”.
Phil Lanning is now highly proficient in “itai” even when spontaneously subjected to pain.
“I even say ‘itai’ when I don’t know it’s coming,” he says.
“It just comes out subconsciously.”
Lanning is starting to have thoughts that he may be turning half Japanese.
“My brain could be turning half Japanese,” he sometimes thinks to himself.
Lanning will progress from “itai” to “ittee” over the next six months before finally evolving into an “ittttttt” gaijin.
