A foreign resident living in Hiroshima has become highly fluent in saying, “I’m fluent”.
“I learnt the Japanese word for ‘fluent’ just so I can say ‘I’m fluent’,” says 2-years-a-gaijin Terrence Cruise.
Cruise now pulls out the “ryuuchou” whenever asked if he can speak Japanese even though his Japanese is pretty shite.
“I say ‘ryuuchou’ in an attempt to encourage locals not to speak to me in English.”
“Thirty per cent of the time, it works every time,” says Cruise.
Cruise also has “Japanese: Fluent” written on his personal Linkedin page.
