Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has declared a coronavirus state of emergency now that the Olympics have been postponed.
Coronavirus infections have spiked dramatically everyday since the cancelation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The declaration will give local authorities the power to enforce stay-at-home orders and the closure of businesses and facilitates.
The total number of covid-19 infections in Japan has jumped to 4,563, according to figures released on Sunday.
Tokyo recorded 143 new cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 1033.
The public should be advised to:
- practice social-distancing of at least 1.5 meters
- wash hands regularly
- avoid touching your face
- cough and sneeze into your elbow
- avoid contact with anyone, unless it is absolutely necessary
