The Japanese government will begin collecting a departure tax on Monday, with people leaving Japan by plane or ship to pay what looks like a ridiculous amount of money because it has three zeros in the amount.

The tax will cost ¥1,000 for each traveller departing Japan.

“That’s a lot of zeros,” said one person commenting on social media.

The new levy will be introduced to cash in on the influx of overseas visitors for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games.

The tax will generate about ¥6,000,000,000 between January and March.

“That’s a lot of zeros,” said another person commenting on social media.
