Asia’s biggest multisport event, attracting more than 10,000 athletes from across the continent, commenced on Saturday in Indonesia, with Japanese athletes wondering, “What are we doing here?”

“Why are we marching into Asia again?” said track and field athlete Yuki Yamazaki.

“I guess it’s a bit like Australia competing in Eurovision.”

Japan is expected to march back home in two weeks after being soundly defeated by China.
