Junnosuke Taguchi, a former member of Japanese all-male idol group KAT-TUN, is facing the gallows after being caught smoking a joint with his partner Rena Komine, a former actress.
“The government strongly condemns marijuana use because drugs are bad, but you should smoke cigarettes to help your nation raise revenue through its ownership in Japan Tobacco,” the federal government said in a press release.
Cigarettes and alcohol are not classified as drugs in Japan, but cannabis is regarded as one of the most deadly substances known to mankind.
“It’s socially acceptable to vomit inside a carriage or pass out on the street but it’s incomprehensible to recreationally smoke weed while watching Netflix inside your own home.”
Around 20,000 deaths every year in Japan are attributable to alcohol.
