The majority of foreign mathematics teachers have been ordered by their schools to speak in math at all times, according to a survey released by the Teachers4Math Association.
“I’ve been warned that I can only speak in numbers and mathematical formulas,” says 2-years-a-gaijin Matthew Wright.
“I was told this by the school principal through an algebra equation.”
Some mathematics instructors living in Japan who look at least half foreign are being bullied into speaking math even outside of class hours.
“I can’t even go to the konbini near my school and speak in Japanese, I have to communicate to the clerk in math.”
Wright says many teachers refuse to communicate with him like a normal human being.
“They’ll often try to speak to me in broken math.”
Wright says he sometimes speaks to students in Japanese when other teachers are not present.
