In a major defeat for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the ruling bloc, some bloke that looks only half Japanese won Okinawa’s governor race on Sunday.
“Oh sweet Jesus, his first name is Denny,” said one news commentator.
“What? You mean like the family restaurant?” asked another.
“Hai, same spelling as well,” said the news commentator who said “Oh sweet Jesus” just moments before.
The 58-year-old Denny Tamaki campaigned by pledging to continue former Gov. Takeshi Onaga’s policy of allowing no new military bases in Okinawa.
NHK pundits pointed out how it’s “so weird that he’s 50% American”, but is opposed to American bases.
“Now every time I see a Denny’s family restaurant I’m going to think of Denny Tamaki,” added political expert Hiroki Tawaguchi.
