Ozeki Kisenosato took out Maegashira Ichinojo on Sunday with the Hundred Hand Slap manoeuvre to grab his first championship at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.

Kisenosato was immediately on the back foot at the beginning of Round 3 with Ichinojo quickly executing three consecutive fly kicks across the ring.

But the 30-year-old from Ibaraki Prefecture surprised his opponent with the Hundred Hand Slap move, achieving a K.O. with 12 seconds to spare.

There were serious concerns that Ichinojo may have suffered from severe concussion during the bout, who at one point appeared extremely unstable on his feet and was reduced to standing in a daze in one spot for a few seconds.

Kisenosato showed no mercy, however, taking full advantage of Ichinojo’s apparent lack of consciousness by moving right up next to him before landing the final blow.

The following announcement was made over the loudspeaker at the conclusion of the battle, “You win!”
