A record 3,671 articles were published about foreigners visiting Japan in the first six months of 2019, up 7.6 per cent from the same period last year.

Newspapers and online media outlets received around 1.21 billion yen (US$11 million) through advertising on this genre of content.

“It’s a real money spinner,” said America Today editor-in-chief Jack Kinsworth.

“We usually like to post one article a week informing our audience that the number of foreigners in Japan has increased again.”

But some people have been complaining about the incessant production of these types of articles.

“Wait a minute, this is another one,” says some person in the future commenting on this article.

Around one quarter of the comments on these articles have a xenophobic vibe.
