Poorly structured apartments throughout various regions of Tokyo are keeping warm by sleeping inside cardboard boxes.

The apartment blocks have only recently found the incredible insulation qualities of cardboard material, according to reports.

“Who would have thought cardboard was so much more effective than walls,” said one apartment in north Tokyo that charges around ¥70,000 key money per tenant.

Warm air escaping from the apartments has been significantly reduced “thanks to these wonderful creations of human ingenuity”.

The boxes are said to have enhanced insulation and drastically decreased electricity bills.

  1. Spot on fellas. My bloody flat freezes the balls off a brass monkey in winter. Heater does nothing. Stupid bloody walls full of air pockets and no double glazing on the windows.
