Believing it to be the exact equivalent of “Happy New Year” in English, a man has continued saying “Yoiotoshio” in January.
“Yoiotoshio,” said foreigner Greg Burns more than 12 hours after the new year had begun.
“The year has akemashite-ed,” thought local woman Kuniko Yabatashi, “so I’m not sure what this guy is saying.”
“It’s supposed to be ‘Yoi otoshi wo’ anyway pre-Jan 1, but there’s no way I’m telling him he’s made a mistake.”
After Greg learns about the error of his gaijin ways in a few years, he will weaponize his newly acquired knowledge against future foreigners arriving in Japan.
